Respiratory Flow

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that obstructs airflow in the lungs. Symptoms include breathing difficulty, cough, and mucus production. It's caused by long-term exposure to irritating gases or particulate matter, most often from cigarette smoke. In the Applied Fluids Research Group we are interested in two main areas with COPD - a) Image based phenotyping to enable better treatment strategies and b) bench-top fluid dynamics modeling of COPD associated conditions.
