Annual Events - Women in Engineering Summer Camp and Auburn University E-Day

The Applied Fluids Research Group works with the Office of Student Services in the College of Engineering at Auburn University to conduct educational outreach workshops for K-12 students to encourage them to choose long-term careers in STEM fields. A recent workshop was conducted for "Women in Engineering Camp" where the participants learned about physics, engineering, and fluid dynamics by using a practical and easily accessible example of a Frisbee. Additionally, the research group also participates in the Auburn University E-day which hosts over 3,000 students from local schools and outreach events with AIAA's Auburn University Chapter. Below are a few photos from all of these events.

Summer 2020 - Army Undergraduate Research and High School Apprenticeship Program (URAP/HSAP)

The Applied Fluids Research Group received a grant from the Army Research Office to host two students for an apprenticeship program. One undergraduate student and one high school student worked together with graduate students in our group (Lokesh Silwal and Abbishek Gururaj) to investigate aerodynamics of pitching and plunging wings. They learned how to design and fabricate a pitching wing setup including how to control the wings motion using stepper motors controlled via LabVIEW. Finally, they instrumented the pitching and plunging wing with load cells to measure the dynamic forces. They also conducted preliminary flow visualization experiments to visualize the dynamic flow features over a pitching wing.

Summer 2021 - Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP)

The Applied Fluids Research Group received a grant from the Army Education Outreach Program to host one high school student for an apprenticeship program. The high school student will be working with postdoctoral fellows in our group (Sarah Morris and Prabakaran Rajamanickam) to investigate flows around an array of elliptical cylinders.
